VIC:Triple fatality victim laid to rest
By Joel Cresswell and Xavier La Canna
MELBOURNE, April 1 AAP - The first of the seven people killed in a tragic week on Victorian
roads has been laid to rest as police pleaded with motorists to drive more responsibly.
Hamish Roddick, 22, was driving a car that struck a pole in Werribee last Saturday
night, killing himself and two teenage passengers.
More than 100 mourners paid tribute to Mr Roddick in a private service at Werribee on Friday.
Rock song Paranoid by Black Sabbath could be heard playing as his casket was loaded
into the hearse and Mr Roddick's father, mother and sister walked behind.
Two naval recruits were killed on Tuesday night when their car hit a power pole near
the HMAS Cerberus training base at Crib Point, south of Melbourne, while three fellow
trainees were critically injured.
Police believe speed and alcohol contributed to both the Werribee and Crib Point crashes.
Two more men died on Thursday when their car rolled down an embankment and onto its
roof near Orbost in Victoria's east, taking the road toll for March to 32, nine more than
the same month in 2010.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe called on drivers to think harder
about how they drive.
"My plea here today is to the community, to all the motorists out there, to actually
think about the way that they drive, the way they behave when they are behind the wheel
of a motor vehicle," he said.
Mr Walshe said the worst crashes this month all involved single cars going off the road.
"That has been the major driver of the number of people who have lost their lives this
particular month," he said.
"Unless we can get people to really understand and appreciate their role as responsible
drivers, my fear is that this sort of road toll is going to continue.
"It is time that everybody starts to think about what their role is, what their responsibility
is as a road user."
Victoria's road toll stands at 71 compared to 74 at the same time last year.
The police warning came just hours before a jury retired to consider its verdict in
the trial of a man charged over a crash that killed four of his mates.
Melbourne man Simon Farrugia, 21, is accused of racing his car against another driven
by Hasan Burke before the fiery crash on the West Gate Freeway in 2007.

Wednesday morning.
Mr Miller said it was a "very difficult time for everyone involved, and the company's
focus was on supporting the family and friends who have been affected, as well as our
employees".
"In conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs, we are doing everything we
can to support the families of those Australians who were on board the flight, and the
family of our expedition guide," he said in the statement.
"At this stage we are hoping and praying that there may still be a positive outcome.
"This is an incredibly difficult time for those affected by this situation and for us.
"Our guides are like an extended family, and our groups become friends as they travel
together, so this has deeply affected us and our travelling community."
He said the group was one of around 50 trips No Roads booked to Kokoda each year.
The group was on a scheduled commercial flight, although charters are often used, but
otherwise there was nothing unusual about this trip, he said.

Qld: Premier warns of tougher times as jobs dip
By Petrina Berry and David Barbeler
BRISBANE, April 2 AAP - Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has warned families to brace
for tougher times after another round of cutbacks in mining and manufacturing jobs.
Ms Bligh is meeting with her jobs squad advisory group on Thursday, the same day that
more than 300 workers will finish up at Brisbane's Fisher and Paykel refrigerator factory.
The appliance manufacturer is moving the operation to Thailand.
A further 350 jobs were lost in the mining sector after BHP Billiton cancelled a services
contract at its Goonyella and Norwich Park coal mines in central Queensland.
Ms Bligh said the job cuts were signs of tougher times ahead.
"My determination to protect and create jobs in Queensland is stronger than ever,"
Ms Bligh told reporters.
"That's why I am meeting with my job squad.
"We are facing the worst employment circumstances this country has seen for decades."
She said a new survey by recruitment firm Hudsons showed the number of Queensland employers
planning staff cutbacks has tripled in the past year confirmed gloomy predictions.
"It just serves to remind all of us that, while the Queensland economy is resilient,
it will not be immune from the worst of economic times," she said.
"We are going to see more job losses. We need to steel ourselves for what's ahead."
Unions are to meet with the administrators of mining contractor HMP Constructions on
Friday, after the company shed 350 jobs at BHP Billiton mines and revealed debts of about
$150 million.
There are also fears of job cuts at Wesfarmers' Curragh mine, where HMP also has a contract.

Fed: Alcopops dollars in limbo
The federal government says the opposition's stance on the new alcopop tax could mean
that taxes paid by consumers could end up going straight to the alcohol industry.
Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD says the 300-million dollars already raised by the new tax
will go back to the manufacturers if the Senate blocks the alcopops laws .. which is looking
likely.
Mr RUDD is using that possibility to try to bludgeon opposition senators into passing the laws.
The Liberals say the industry must not get the money .. and the alcopops makers say
they don't it.
The government increased the tax on alcopops by 70 per cent in April .. saying the
move would help stamp out teen binge-drinking .. but the opposition opposes the move ..
saying it's just a tax grab.

NSW: Lack of enforcement leads to more drunken assaults: Stoner
AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: Lack of enforcement leads to more drunken assaults: Stoner
SYDNEY, April 24 AAP - Lack of enforcement by liquor licensing authorities and police
has helped fuel a rise in drunken assaults across NSW, the state opposition says.
Acting opposition leader Andrew Stoner says moves to add a dedicated police squad and
extra compliance officers will only "scratch the surface" of the problem.
The government has announced that 25 new inspectors will be charged with monitoring
alcohol-related trouble spots.
"These liquor inspectors will be deployed to hot spots across NSW to carry out covert
and over operations in and around licensed venues," NSW Gaming and Racing Minister Graham
West said this morning.
But Mr Stoner said the government's response was inadequate.
"Yesterday we heard about an additional 30 police, today we hear about 25 new inspectors
with the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR)," Mr Stoner told reporters in Sydney
today.
"These resources are barely going to scratch the surface of a problem which has more
than doubled over the last ten years."
An auditor-general's report released yesterday showed the number of alcohol-related
assaults had increased from 10,305 in 1997-98 to 20,475 in 2006-07.
Mr Stoner said the report had stung the Iemma government into action after years of
ignoring the problem, but things would not change unless more patrols were conducted during
the problem hours between 11pm and 3am.
"They haven't been there, and that's why we've seen this problem occur," he said.
"At the end of the day it gets down to enforceability."
Mr Stoner said he supported OLGR moves to target problem drinking by placing curfews
on pubs in trouble spots.
Drunks will be banned from hotels for causing trouble, Mr West announced today.
"Troublesome patrons who refuse to leave a licensed venue, or attempt to re-enter or
remain in the vicinity after being ejected, will face on-the-spot fines of $550 for each
offence," he said.
Mr Stoner said measures were already in place for dealing with intoxicated customers.
"Already, pubs and clubs are not supposed to be serving drunks," he said. "Already
they have the power to ban the drunks from their establishment."
The 25 extra OLGR officers, who ensure compliance with laws surrounding the responsible
serving of alcohol, will be based at Sydney (18), Newcastle (5), Dubbo (1) and Wagga Wagga
(1).
Mr West said they could also be sent into other regional areas.
"These inspectors will be instrumental in identifying areas where the operation of
licensed venues is causing an unacceptable impact on the local community," he said in
a statement today.

NSW: Flawed laws to blame for rapist on the loose
The New South Wales opposition says the legislation aimed at keeping serious sex offenders
behind bars once their sentences expire is flawed.
Acting opposition justice spokesman CHRIS HARTCHER says the confusing laws are to blame
for a serial rapist and child sex offender giving authorities the slip.
RAYMOND BARRY CORNWALL is being hunted after breaching the conditions of his release
under an extended supervision order.
The 52-year-old disappeared .. within half an hour of being escorted to approved accommodation
in Parramatta .. and having an electronic monitor fitted to his ankle.
The state government tried to keep CORNWELL behind bars .. but he successfully appealed
a NSW Supreme Court decision to detain him for eight months .. to undergo a special custodial
sex offenders program.
Mr HARTCHER says the new laws need clearly established criteria to guide the courts.
Police are still hunting CORNWALL and have warned people not to approach him under
any circumstances.

Fed: Uranium sales a fair way off - Downer
CANBERRA, Aug 15 AAP - Uranium sales to India are fair way off, and would need to pass
a number of hurdles before they could occur, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says.
The National Security Committee of Cabinet was yesterday expected to consider a proposal
from Mr Downer to allow the fuel to be sold to India.
Mr Downer was not elaborating on the committee's discussion but it is reported to have
agreed to the proposal.
The federal government is considering uranium sales to India despite the fact it is
not signed up to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).
While Australian nuclear sales are usually conditional on the NPT, India may get an
exemption due to a deal it struck with the United States, opening its civilian reactors
to international inspections.
If any deal were to be struck, Mr Downer said it will be some time off, with a nuclear
safeguards agreement to be negotiated, which would ensure that uranium would only go to
civilian reactors that were subjected to an international inspections regime.
"If we're ever to sell uranium to India, it's a bit down the track," he told ABC TV last night.
And he stressed the uranium would not find its way into nuclear weapons.
"India can always get uranium for its nuclear weapons program if they want to, it's
just that they will never get it from Australia," Mr Downer said.
"If we were to go down the path of negotiating an agreement with India, we wouldn't
sell uranium that could be used in any way at all for any military purpose."

Fed: Fears US base will be terrorist target "silly": Tuckey
By Nicolas Perpitch
PERTH, Feb 15 AAP - Fears a new United States military communications base in Western
Australia will become a terrorist target are "silly", says federal MP Wilson Tuckey.
The US has been given permission to build the base 30km east of Geraldton, in midwest
WA, after three years of secret negotiations with the federal government.
The American base would be co-located with the Australian Defence Signals Directorate
(DSD), Australia's communications ground station at Kojarena.
Greens senator Rachel Siewert has warned the US base would become a terrorist target.
"Australians are now even more deeply enmeshed in United States military endeavours,
whether we agree with them or not," the senator said.
"It is a classic (Prime Minister) John Howard capitulation to US military interests."
Wilson Tuckey, the Liberal member for O'Connor, which takes in Geraldton, said that
when the DSD base was first opened there were claims it would become a nuclear target.
He said those claims were as unfounded as the current fears.
"I think they're silly arguments," Mr Tuckey said.
"It's not something you'd target particularly, by the nature of its activities. It's
there to access communications and it has been proven over the years that nobody has been
very interested in stopping its operation."
The Geraldton Council said it did not know anything about the base expansion.
"We have not been informed of anything, so we cannot make a statement at this time,"
a spokeswoman for the council said.
WA already houses the US North-West Cape communications base. The Pine Gap joint facility
is near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Conexant Announces World's Smallest CDMA Power Amplifier Modules; Compact Modules use GaAs InGaP Process Technology for Increased Efficiency and Improved Linearity.
Business Editors & High-Tech Writers
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2001
Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for communications applications, today announced a new family of power amplifier modules (PAMs) for code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular handsets, personal communications system (PCS) and wireless local loop applications.
The CX77105, CX77106 and CX77107 support IS95/CDMA2000 1xEV operations, as well as AMPS, Korean PCS and U.S. PCS, respectively. Each of the devices is offered in a compact 10-pin, 4mm x 4mm package, which is more than 50 percent smaller than any other 50-ohm matched CDMA module currently offered.
The devices are fabricated using an indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) layer on gallium arsenide (GaAs) substrate technology.
"The majority of CDMA handset designers and manufacturers worldwide rely on Conexant for their CDMA power amplifiers," said Moiz Beguwala, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Wireless Communications division.
"Our new 4mm x 4mm package is a notable breakthrough for the CDMA market, and will provide handset manufacturers with an extremely small, high-performance PAM that will allow further reduction in the phone size. This, coupled with the increased efficiency provided through our GaAs InGaP technology, allows for further improvement of the cellular phone's talk and standby time."
Power amplifiers provide the energy for transmitting a wireless signal through the handset antenna to the base station, and are the biggest determinant of handset battery life and talk time. Conexant's new fully matched CDMA PAMs meet the stringent IS95/CDMA2000 linearity requirements to and exceeding 28 dBm output power, and can be driven to levels beyond 31 dBm for high efficiency in FM mode operation.
A low current digital pin (VCONT) provides improved efficiency for the low RF power range of operation.
Conexant, a pioneer in PAM technology, has an extensive portfolio of PA modules that encompasses solutions for every major wireless standard including WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, TDMA, AMPS, and wireless local loop applications. Conexant's devices are based on a 50 GHz gallium arsenide (GaAs) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) process technology.
Pricing and Availability
Conexant's CDMA power amplifier modules are sampling now, with volume production slated for the first quarter of 2002. Modules are priced at $3.50 in quantities of 100K.

London (PRWEB) July 19, 2011
Avanta is boosting the speed of the shared broadband data services it provides to clients from the already excellent 8Mbps to an improved 20Mbps, recognising the need for speed due to increased demand for streaming media, desktop video conferencing and use of cloud capabilities.
The serviced office operator is providing the broadband speed upgrade at no extra cost to clients and will be introducing the 20Mbps connectivity option at its London City, Austin Friars' business centre during August with a roll out across a majority of its other London centres over the next two months.
"This free upgrade to internet access speed is part of our continuing quest to provide better services to our office space clients. It will provide a step change in download and upload data rates, and will give an immediate productivity boost to our client base," comments David Kinnaird, Avanta's Group Operations Director.
"Internet access is part of Avanta's business services package, which is [pounds sterling]99 per month/per user at our London centres and just [pounds sterling]69 per month/per user outside of London. The free upgrade will happen overnight and there will be no loss of service at all -- clients who choose to upgrade will simply log in the next day to faster internet access."

LOS ANGELES -- During the second day of Microsoft Corp.'s Professional Developers Conference 2009, Microsoft outlined new opportunities and resources for developers to create applications that take advantage of the power of Windows and the reach of the Web. Microsoft also invited developers to test new beta versions of Microsoft Silverlight 4, Microsoft Office 2010 and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.
Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division, showcased how developers can take advantage of the unique software and hardware innovations fueled by Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8 to build compelling computing experiences for customers.
'The tremendous support behind Windows 7 equates to tangible opportunity for developers on the Windows platform,' Sinofsky said.'We're looking forward to the new ways that they will bring Windows and the Web to life for all of our customers.'
Looking ahead, Sinofsky also shared an early look at some of the work under way on Internet Explorer 9, highlighting advancements in performance and interoperable standards, as well as advancements such as using DirectX to bring the full power of the PC to the Web experience.
Developing Rich User Experiences
Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president of the .NET Developer Platform, showed how Silverlight provides rich cross-platform experiences that power three screens. He announced the public beta of Silverlight 4, only four months after delivering Silverlight 3, continuing Microsoft's rapid pace of innovation to help companies design and develop experiences on the Web for both consumers and enterprises. 'NO COUNTRY,' FOUR WINS THE COEN BROTHERS' CRIME EPIC STRIKES GOLD AT 80TH ACADEMY AWARDS.(Life and Arts)
Byline: WILLIAM ARNOLD P-I film critic
Ever since this year's Oscar season got under way in January, the Hollywood writers strike has loomed fatefully above it: first threatening to cancel Oscar night entirely, then stoking much expectation that the last-minute settlement would result in an evening either grander or duller than usual.
But, though host Jon Stewart kept making jokes about it, Hollywood's most contentious labor confrontation of the modern era had little effect on its annual showcase of self-congratulatory glamour. The 80th Academy Awards seemed a bit more spare than usual but no worse, better or appreciably different from the template.
Oscar night '08 was long, frequently awkward, sometimes slick, often tedious, occasionally inspiring.
There were flubs but not many. There were upsets but nothing earthshaking. All the acting winners were foreigners. Jack Nicholson was in the front row in his sunglasses. It was well, it was the Oscars.
More specifically, here is how the evening struck me:
THE HOST: As an entertainment event, Oscar night is invariably judged by the performance of its master of ceremonies. He must be self-deprecating, subtly irreverent, quick on his feet and willing to do whatever it takes to keep things moving smoothly. In his first outing two years ago, Stewart did the best job of it since Billy Crystal in his prime. In his second outing Sunday night, he was just about as good. His monologue was sharp and enjoyably political. His ad-libs were many and occasionally brilliant. He seemed honored to be there but not trying too hard to impress anybody. All told, he was pretty darn funny.
THE AWARDS: The frequent charge made against the Oscars is that predicting their outcome each year has become something of an exact science - the big night has lost all its suspense. The fact is that, if you followed the various statistical guidelines or advice of the major handicappers over the past five years, you probably won your office pool. Last night, that certainly proved true. The closest thing to an upset was Marion Cotillard's win over the favorite, Julie Christie, in the best actress race, but even that was not a surprise to the Vegas oddsmakers who evened the two actresses' chances over the past week.
Otherwise, allthose favored to win ended up with a statue. In this sense, it was a predictable, ho-hum affair.
THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES: In this new era of instant (and endless) Internet and TV replay, big-name Oscar winners have become increasingly cautious in the spotlight. Nobody wants to look like a fool, and it's been awhile since we've seen the kind of exuberance that Roberto Benigni, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sally Field showed in their historic big moments. The only overwhelming emotion showed Sunday night was by Cotillard, who clearly didn't expect the prize. Javier Bardem's tribute to his mother (in Spanish) was cute and touching. Diablo Cody's teary thanks to her family "for loving me for the way I am" put a little choke in my throat. Daniel Day-Lewis was wonderfully gracious and elegant. Tilda Swinton did an unexpected little stand-up routine. Otherwise, the speeches seemed somehow more boring than usual to me.
THE PRESENTERS: The trick of a good Oscar presentation or introductory speech is to be jaunty but relaxed, while giving absolutely no indication that your heavily rehearsed words have been placed in your mouth by a professional writer. In presenting the supporting acting statues, Jennifer Hudson and Alan Arkin, respectively, could hardly have been more wooden - nor could Owen Wilson in his first public appearance since his suicide attempt. Cameron Diaz had trouble pronouncing the word "cinematography" in presenting that award but made an ingratiating joke about it. Nicholson has presented so many times that he does it by rote, and, though he stumbles, somehow it always comes off. But, in presenting the best actor award, Helen Mirren - a class act all the way - showed us how it's really done.
THE NOSTALGIA: As the 80th-anniversary Oscar show, the expectation was that the evening would be packed with teary montages to the golden movie past, and this expectation was not disappointed. I counted more than 10 of these things, including three that were actually jokes kidding the excessive number of montages. There were also (somewhat intrusive) mini-interviews with Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg and others about their past Oscar moments, and the honorary Oscar to the career of Robert Boyle, the 98-year-old production designer and four-time Oscar nominee who gave a distinctive look to more than a 100 movies, including Hitchcock's "Saboteur, "North By Northwest" and "The Birds." But, for me, the evening's great moment of nostalgia was seeing, my God, Mickey Rooney on the red carpet. It was exactly 70 years ago that this persistent star received his first honorary Oscar - seven decades later and he's still walking into the building with a date on his arm. Now that's a survivor. Why did no one acknowledge this feat?
THE MUSIC: With no big musical in the best picture race, and three of the five nominated songs from the same movie ("Enchanted"), the musical component of the show seemed somehow more underwhelming than usual. One of the montages had a flash of Isaac Hayes in his S&M chain outfit performing the theme from "Shaft" in 1971, and I thought: When was the last time we saw anything as lively and outrageous as that at the Oscars? But the evening was saved, musically, by the win of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for their "Once" duet song, "Falling Slowly." They were the Cinderella couple from the year's Cinderella movie; and Irglova (cut off from speaking by the timers but called back to the podium after the commercial by the gentlemanly Stewart) gave one of the evening's more heartfelt and inspiring "your-dream-can-come-true" acceptance speeches.
THE VISUALS: Most of the Oscar nights of the past decade have been a showcase both for the industry's CGI wizardry and the ongoing art of set design. But Sunday night, perhaps because there was so much uncertainty that the event would actually happen, the effects were much more utilitarian. The only special effect was the opening sequence - a virtual-reality race to the Kodak Theatre by car through streets crowded with CGI-generated famous movie characters - and the Oscar set was vaguely futuristic but not very noticeable and not at all memorable. Similarly, the designer TV commercials, which in recent years have been more innovative and clever (and, of course, expensive) than the nominees of the three short-film categories, were all low-key, and only one Diet Coke spot had a movie theme.

EPICENTER EYES CATALOG, INTERNET `TENANTS'; NEW RETAIL CONCEPT WOULD BRING NONTRADITIONAL RETAILERS TO MALL LOCATIONS.(Epicenter Holdings Inc.)
Byline: Meredith Derby
LAS VEGAS -- Consumers soon will be able to browse a wide selection of their favorite catalog and Internet brands -- and in a mall setting, not at home.
Epicenter Holdings Inc., an affiliate of Gordon Group Holdings LLC, recently revealed a new shopping center concept designed to reuse vacant mall anchor locations, bringing together catalog- and Internet-based retailers in a showcase format. The concept, called Epicenter Collection, is expected to bow in a 180,000-square-foot anchor spot at the Glimcher Realty Trust-owned Polaris Fashion Place in Columbus, Ohio, in 2006.
Epicenter Collection is expected to house 70 branded apparel, accessories, home and beauty catalog and Internet retailers and is eyeing prospective companies such as Red Envelope, L.L. Bean, Dooney & Bourke and Hold Everything, executives said at the International Council of Shopping Centers spring convention here last month.
"We're offering [catalog and Internet retailers] an opportunity to come in and build a store, build a presentation showroom, for what would be less than $100 a square foot, with a short-term commitment of a three-year lease," explained Ray Carew, Epicenter's executive vice-president of business development. He said Epicenter also is "talking to existing retailers that may not have stores within that mall and may not want to invest when it costs $500 a square foot to put a store in, and then sign a 10-year lease."
Epicenter Collection will center around a racetrack design within the typical two-level anchor store site. Showrooms designed to the retailer's specifications off the racetrack design will focus on visual displays, where customers can touch and purchase merchandise. The showcases range from 600 square feet to 6,000 square feet, with the average size being around 1,500 square feet, Carew said. Kiosks of 100 square feet are also available.
"As retail designers, one of the things we see happening a lot is the huge number of brands that want to experiment with a storefront now -- and they're very well-known brands in retail -- but they're just currently not in the mall," said Jay Valgora, design principal of the WalkerGroup/CNI, the company that will help tenants design store showcases.
No specific retailers have been signed to the Epicenter concept. Carew said however, that "the reaction has been very positive," and an Epicenter spokeswoman said the company is "in final negotiations with a few retailers." Around 100 Epicenters are expected to eventually open in the U.S. and abroad.

Missouri Attorney General Sues Credit Counseling Firm for Fraud.
Byline: Michael D. Sorkin
Sep. 12--One of the fastest-growing credit counseling companies is AmeriDebt, whose late-night TV ads promise free help to get out of debt.
On Thursday, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon sued the company for fraud, warning that it makes millions of dollars from consumers who could save money repaying loans without AmeriDebt's help.
The suit accuses AmeriDebt of posing as a nonprofit company to lure customers, then funneling their payments into for-profit companies operated by one of the owners, a convicted felon.
AmeriDebt also tricks consumers into making "voluntary donations" -- averaging $327 -- allegedly to pay for training the company's counselors and other services, it says.
"Unfortunately," Nixon said, "with its high, hidden fees and lack of any significant credit counseling, AmeriDebt has served more as a boat anchor than a life preserver for many consumers."
The investigation began after Nixon saw one of the company's TV ads and became suspicious. Consumers also complained to the attorney general's office.
State investigators say the company has bilked about 2,000 people in Missouri of an estimated $500,000, along with thousands of other debt-ridden people nationwide.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed a similar suit in February. The District of Columbia won $2 million in a fraud suit in 1999. The Federal Trade Commission also is investigating the company.
AmeriDebt founder Andris Pukke of Pittsburgh also is named as a defendant. He started the company in September 1996, the same month he pleaded guilty to a federal felony charge of trying to defraud consumers by promising "debt consolidation loans," and then not providing them.
AmeriDebt operates over the Internet and promises a "complete, comprehensive credit-counseling program."
Nixon says the promise is usually pretty worthless.
His suit says the company's counselors are salespeople who often lack any real knowledge of debt counseling.
The suit says AmeriDebt often fails to provide any counseling: instead, the counselors' job is to sell consumers a debt consolidation plan, which is usually the same for everyone. Then AmeriDebt turns over customer files, accounts and most of their loan payments to one of the company's for-profit sister companies.
Those companies also are named as defendants. Investigators say AmeriDebt developed a complex scheme to keep customers from learning that that they were not dealing with nonprofit credit counselors.
Most of the money AmeriDebt makes, the suit says, is from creditors and is based upon how much money AmeriDebt is able to get its customers to repay.
An AmeriDebt spokeswoman said the company was preparing a statement responding to the allegations.
There is no federal regulation of debt counseling companies. Illinois requires the companies to be licensed; Missouri does not.

EYEBEAM
An innocent visit to www.jodi.org brings immediate, alarming results: A hoard of mini browser windows, each completely black except for the standard white menu bar, manically proliferate on your desktop; they'll persist until you close your Internet browser completely. In a sense, artists Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans (collaborating as JODI since 1994) are the Dadaists of Internet art: Like those early members of the avant-garde, their work employs strategies of rupture and subversion to create an estrangement effect, jarring viewers for a moment out of their everyday lives online. Though I reassured myself I was witnessing an artwork, it could easily have been a virus ready to decimate my hard drive.
A harrowing encounter at a personal computer used to be the only way to experience JODI's 1998 project
With "INSTALL.EXE," Paesmans and Heemskerk have handled the first presentation of their work in physical space with the utmost sensitivity. To their credit, they don't attempt the impossible: to re-create, within a gallery context, an invasion of one's personal computer (and by extension, the security of one's home, office, or personal space). Instead, they've chosen to highlight an engagement with obsolescence--a less apparent but equally compelling aspect of their work. The show's centerpiece is a new project composed of eight distinctly old-fashioned-looking '80s-era TVs sitting in a row on a long table. Each plays a slightly different modified version of the shooter game Jet Set Willy (chosen by the artists for the year in which its popularity peaked: symbolically charged 1984). In another savvy bit of exhibition design, the pair hung ethernet cables from the gallery's twenty-foot ceiling. These can be used to play the exhibition's eponymous software project (installed on laptops available at Eyebeam's front desk), but most of the time they dangle forlornly as if abandoned. There's an elegiac quality to this piece, and to the exhibit overall--one that rhymes perfectly with both Eyebeam's cavernous gallery space and JODI's long-standing challenge to the utopian assumptions that permeate Internet discourse. Most Web art tends to operate in an in, agreed future tense, perpetually envisioning the "unrealized potential" of the Internet. JODI's work, by contrast, makes up a far more complex and accurate reflection of the online world we actually inhabit. As the dreams of technology's future rapidly dissolve into the ghosts of its past, they navigate a present that remains permanently unresolved.
