Fed: Austs in Iraq continue Anzac spirit: Hill
CANBERRA, April 25 AAP - Australia's efforts in Iraq are a continuation of the Anzac
tradition, Defence Minister Robert Hill said from Turkey today.
Speaking from a ferry on his way to the dawn service at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli, Senator
Hill said Anzac Day was a special day not only for Australians and New Zealanders but
also for the Turkish population.
He said Anzac traits, such as caring for friends and one's community, were embodied
today by the efforts of Australia in Iraq.
"The legacy of the Anzacs is important, and we must also live that legacy," he told
AAP via phone.
"Each of us have an opportunity to continue that legacy, in the way we care for others,
in the values that we share and embrace.
"What we're doing in Iraq in helping to rehabilitate the country is carrying on the
legacy of Anzac."
Senator Hill said his thoughts were with Australian personnel and their families.
"At this time I always think about Australian personnel," he said.
"But I'd like to also acknowledge the family and friends of those personnel. It must
be difficult at any time of the year for them, but particularly on Anzac Day when you're
thinking about the sacrifices made by the Anzacs."
