MONITOR CHOSEN TO OVERSEE FIRM.(BUSINESS)

NEW YORK -- A judge appointed a former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Wednesday to make sure WorldCom doesn't destroy accounting documents and its executives don't receive outsized payouts from the faltering communications giant.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff chose Richard Breeden, who headed the SEC from 1989 to 1993, to monitor the company in the SEC's civil fraud suit against WorldCom for accounting improprieties.

WorldCom is struggling to avoid bankruptcy since announcing last week that it improperly accounted for nearly $4 billion in expenses. The Justice Department has begun a preliminary …
